2019 Telly Award Winner In an attempt to reconcile with her family's and community's brutal and painful history, and pave a new path forward, Yakama Nation Member, Emily Washines, is connecting with U.S. combatant descendants of the Yakama War. A war descendant herself, Washines is working to change the lens through which the Northwest remembers this history, by pursuing a dream that historical enemies can one day stand together as one community. The Yakama War was produced as part of a promotional series entitled NATIVE AMERICA: NORTHWEST STORIES. 2017 NW Regional Emmy Nominee Maleeha Choudhry’s idea of America comes from the Woody Guthrie song that she grew up listening to, which proclaims, “This land was made for you and me.” But the rise in hate crimes and anti-Islamic rhetoric in recent months has altered her view. After competing in only a handful of pageants, 18-year-old Alex Carlson-Helo was thrilled to win the 2012 Miss Washington Teen USA pageant. Then, in 2014, she began experiencing muscle and joint pain that she described as “different.” Months later, Alex was hospitalized with a paralyzed leg. Doctors eventually diagnosed her with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). She was told that she may never walk again.
